Lore and chronicle tone

Awakening and the Fallen World

Mage: The Awakening is personal horror through power. You were a Sleeper until a Path opened and a Watchtower answered. Now you wield Arcana while Orders, consilia, and the Lie press back. Chronicle tone can be consilium politics, occult archaeology, or a lone apostate between orthodox orders. The creator captures shadow name, Path symbolism, and Order culture so your Storyteller knows what your magic looks like before the first casting.

Paths, Orders, and the price of Wisdom

Your Path is Supernal destiny: ruling and inferior Arcana, favored resistance, and the symbolic language your magic prefers. Your Order is Atlantean politics: rote specialties, mentors, libraries, and enemies. Wisdom tracks how far you bend the rules without breaking yourself. Document aspirations and obsessions in the wizard so the table shares expectations about what drives your mage when mana runs low.

Rules and creation flow

Ten-step Awakening 2e wizard

The creator guides you through identity, attributes (5/4/3 with Path resistance free), skills (11/7/4 plus free Order Occult), three specialties, Path and Order, Arcana and rotes, merits (10 dots; Gnosis above 1 costs 5 each), virtue and vice, aspirations and obsessions, then optional sheet notes. Each step validates against Second Edition budgets before you continue. Pause anytime; local drafts persist, and cloud saves unlock cross-device editing.

Arcana, rotes, and PDF sheets

At creation you spread seven Arcana dots (two at two, one at one, plus a bonus dot), pick three rotes, and assign praxes by Gnosis. Ruling Arcana must be rated; inferior Arcana cannot be rated at creation in 2e. Export aligns with the official two-page Awakening sheet for print or digital play. Update and re-export after experience awards.

Storyteller and player tips

Storyteller guidance

Session Zero: agree on consilium tone and whether the Lie is paranoid or sleepy in your city. Have players read the Awakening reference guide for Path and Order comparisons, then export PDFs with Arcana spreads visible. Offer one scene where Order status opens a door and one where it closes it.

Player guidance

Choose Path for ruling Arcana you want to cast, not only combat potential. Take the quiz at /awakening/what-are-you if you are torn between Paths. Write how your sympathetic magic looks in public scenes. Revisit the dossier when Gnosis rises.
